About Queens

Queens is a New York City borough on Long Island across the East River from Manhattan. Flushing Meadows Corona Park, with its 21-story 1964 World's Fair globe sculpture, the Unisphere, hosts the U.S. Open tennis tournament. The park’s Queens Museum is known for the "Panorama," a building-for-building model of New York City. Nearby Citi Field is the stadium of pro baseball’s Mets. The New York City Borough of Queens was authorized on May 4, 1897. Today the population of Queens is about 1.3 million.Queens hosts various museums and cultural institutions that serve its diverse communities. They range from the historical (such as the John Bowne House) to the scientific (such as the New York Hall of Science), from conventional art galleries (such as the Noguchi Museum) to unique graffiti exhibits (such as 5 Pointz). The cuisine available in Queens reflects its vast cultural diversity. The cuisine of a particular neighborhood often represents its demographics; for example, Astoria hosts many Greek restaurants, in keeping with its traditionally Greek population. Jackson Heights is known for its many Indian and Latin-American eateries.

Of these over 60% live in Forest Hills, Rego Park, Kew Gardens, Kew Gardens Hills, Jamaica, Fresh Meadows, Flushing, Bay Terrace and Little Neck. 15% of the Jewish population is Orthodox. There are well over 50 kosher restaurants and cafes in the Queens area mainly in Union Turnpike, Main Street and Queens Boulevard. Transport connections to and from other areas of New York are good.
