About Jerusalem

Jerusalem Capital City of Israel is located west of the Dead Sea, has been a place of pilgrimage and worship for Jews, Christians and Muslims since the biblical era. Its Old City retains significant religious sites concentrated around the Temple Mount compound, including the Western Wall, sacred to Judaism, and the Dome of the Rock, a 7th-century Islamic shrine with a gold dome, which is located on the Temle Mount the holiest site in Judaism. The city is served by the Jerusalem Light Railway runs from Pisgat Ze'ev in the north via the Old City and city centre to Mt. Herzl in the south. A bus ride from the main bus station, along this route, is the area of Neve Sha’anan the museum area and home of the Knesset the Israeli parliament. Amongst the museums are the Bible lands, Israel and Shrine of the Book. The Israel Festival, featuring indoor and outdoor performances by local and international singers, concerts, plays, and street theater has been held annually since 1961. The city is characterized by a hot-summer Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers, and mild, wet winters.

Jerusalem has been sacred to Judaism for roughly 3000 years, to Christianity for around 2000 years, and to Islam for approximately 1400 years. The 2000 Statistical Yearbook of Jerusalem lists 1204 synagogues, 158 churches, and 73 mosques within the city. Jerusalem has been sacred to the Jews since King David proclaimed it his capital in the 10th century BCE. Jerusalem was the site of Solomon's Temple and the Second Temple. Today, the Western Wall, a remnant of the wall surrounding the Second Temple, is a Jewish holy site second only to the Holy of Holies on the Temple Mount itself. There are many other places of interest in the Old City including museums, restaurants and cafes. Another place to visit which is full of kosher eateries and Jewish life is Shuk Machane Yehuda, the market on Machane Yehuda Street.
