About Geneva

Geneva is a Swiss city that lies at the southern tip of expansive Lac Léman (Lake Geneva). Surrounded by the Alps and Jura mountains, the city has views of dramatic Mont Blanc. Headquarters of Europe’s United Nations and the Red Cross, it’s a global hub for diplomacy and banking. French influence is widespread, from the language to gastronomy and bohemian districts like Carouge. The municipality (ville de Genève) has a population (as of December 2014) of 197,376, and the canton (which is essentially the city and its inner-ring suburbs) has 481,545 residents. There are 81 buildings or sites in Geneva that are listed as Swiss heritage site of national significance, and the entire old city of Geneva is part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites. Museums and art galleries are numerous throughout the city.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Geneva

A Jewish community in Geneva was established by the end of the 18th century. For several decades the few Jews who lived in Geneva worshiped in Carouge, where the old synagogue still exists. The Swiss community is presided over mostly by the Schweizerischer Israelitischer Gemeindebund (SIG), founded in 1904 to oppose the restriction on shechita. There are thought to be 3 synagogues in Geneva serving a population of 4,400. There are also a few kosher establishments including restaurants, cafes and shops.
