About Luanda

Luanda, formerly named São Paulo da Assunção de Loanda, is the capital and largest city in Angola, and the country's most populous and important city, primary port and major industrial, cultural and urban centre. Located on Angola's coast with the Atlantic Ocean, Luanda is both Angola's chief seaport and its administrative centre. Portuguese explorer Paulo Dias de Novais founded Luanda on 25 January 1576. Luanda is divided into two parts, the Baixa de Luanda (lower Luanda, the old city) and the Cidade Alta (upper city or the new part). Luanda has a hot semi-arid climate.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Luanda

Chabad moved into Luanda in 2016. Chabad of Angola is directed by Rabbi Levi Yitzchak and Devorah Leah Chekly, who moved there with their young daughter a year-and-half-ago. The Cheklys, who speak French, Hebrew and English, have been reaching out to the estimated 300 Jewish families living full-time in Angola, in addition to visitors. Initially housed in a small apartment, the family will now move into the three-story villa and workspace.
