About Africa
Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Africa
The Jewish population historically was confined to the Mediterranean coast, because of trading and the influence of Empires. Ethiopia had a Jewish population from around the 1st Temple period. The Jewish population in other African countries mainly arrived at the end of the 19th century with the Europeans. After the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 many of the Arabic countries of the Maghreb who with their developing Nationalist and Islamic Brotherhood movements turned against the Jewish communities who had in some cases been present for over nearly 2 thousand years. Many Jews were forced out or fled with little but the clothes they stood in. They escaped to other countries mainly Israel. Today there are very few Jews left in the Mediterranean lands of Africa. There are many newer communities springing up across Africa, some believe that they were Jewish originally, others are converting for community reasons. The largest Jewish community is in South Africa where there is a population of 70,000 living mainly in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Chabad has a presence in many smaller communities but it is very difficult to get kosher food in many countries in Africa. There is a small community in Morocco and access to kosher food and synagogues, it is generally a welcoming place to Jewish visitors. Tunisia which has a very old community especially in Djerba is a much more difficult place to visit.
