About Salzburg

Salzburg is a city in Austria that has long been known for its beauty and culture. Located on the banks of the Salzach River, this picturesque city is home to some of Europe's most stunning architecture, as well as many cultural attractions. Salzburg was founded by Saint Rupert in 696 AD and has since become one of Austria’s most popular tourist destinations. Salzburg, Austria has a rich and vibrant Jewish history that dates back centuries. For hundreds of years, the city was home to a thriving Jewish community who made great contributions to the cultural and economic life of the city.There are around 100 Jews living in Salzburg. The Synagogue of Salzburg was renovated and reopened in 1968 and is in use today as an Orthodox Synagogue. There is also an active Chabad House in Salzburg. The Chabad House offers kosher food for Shabbat and holidays with advance registration. Kosher bread is available during the summer months and can be pre-ordered at certain local bakeries. we will publish detailed information towards the end of June

Today, Salzburg is still home to several important Jewish landmarks which serve as reminders of its past. One such landmark is the Judengasse (Jewish street) located in the old town district near Getreidegasse Street. This narrow cobblestone street was once home to Salzburg’s largest concentration of Jews until they were expelled from Austria in 1519 by order of Emperor Maximilian I. The synagogue on this street dates back to 1709 and is one of Salzburg’s oldest surviving synagogues still standing today. Also nearby are two Jewish cemeteries dating from 1618 and 1690 respectively where many prominent members of the local community are buried.

Salzburg is also home to a number of Holocaust memorials, including the Monument for Deported Jews located in Kapitelplatz Square and the Memorial Stone with Names in Mirabell Gardens. These memorials serve to remind visitors of the tragic events that took place during World War II and are a poignant reminder of the city’s past.
