Today, Salzburg is still home to several important Jewish landmarks which serve as reminders of its past. One such landmark is the Judengasse (Jewish street) located in the old town district near Getreidegasse Street. This narrow cobblestone street was once home to Salzburg’s largest concentration of Jews until they were expelled from Austria in 1519 by order of Emperor Maximilian I. The synagogue on this street dates back to 1709 and is one of Salzburg’s oldest surviving synagogues still standing today. Also nearby are two Jewish cemeteries dating from 1618 and 1690 respectively where many prominent members of the local community are buried.
Salzburg is also home to a number of Holocaust memorials, including the Monument for Deported Jews located in Kapitelplatz Square and the Memorial Stone with Names in Mirabell Gardens. These memorials serve to remind visitors of the tragic events that took place during World War II and are a poignant reminder of the city’s past.
