About Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is a Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea, in the region of Dalmatia. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea, a seaport and the centre of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Its total population of 2011 was 42,615. In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The prosperity of the city was historically based on maritime trade; as the capital of the maritime Republic of Ragusa, it achieved a high level of development, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries, as it became notable for its wealth and skilled diplomacy. The beginning of modern tourism is associated with the construction of the Hotel Imperial in Dubrovnik in 1897. Dubrovnik is among the 10 best preserved medieval walled cities in the world. It has hot, moderately dry summers and mild, wet winters.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Dubrovnik

After 1492 when Jews were expelled from Spain by Alhambra decree many Shepard Jews and Marranos came to Dubrovnik. Some of the new comers even escaped Spain on Ragusan ships as the Republic's ships visited Spain frequently. In 1496 the Jews were expelled from Portugal and even more Jews sought their fortunes in Dubrovnik and the whole Balkan peninsula region. In 1540 a ghetto was formed for the housing of the Jewish community that had been invited to live in Dubrovnik. The old Sephardi Synagogue, which is believed to be the second oldest in Europe, and perhaps the oldest Sephardic synagogue in the world, is still in use today. In 1998 30 Jews lived in Dubrovnik.
