About Rijeka

Rijeka is the principal seaport and the third-largest city in Croatia it is located on Kvarner Bay, an inlet of the Adriatic Sea and has a population of 128,624 inhabitants (2011). Historically traces of Neolithic settlements can be found in the region, the earliest modern settlements on the site were Celtic, because of its strategic position and its excellent deep-water port, the city was fiercely contested, especially among Italy, Hungary and Croatia, changing hands and demographics many times over centuries. The Rijeka Carnival is held each year before Lent (between late January and early March) in Rijeka,Croatia. Established in 1982, it has become the biggest carnival in Croatia. Every year there are numerous events preceding the carnival itself. In recent years, the international carnival has attracted around 15,000 participants from all over the world organized in over 200 carnival groups, with crowds of over 100,000. Rijeka has a Humid subtropical climate with warm summers and relatively mild and rainy winters. Snow is rare (usually 3 days per year, almost always occurring in patches).

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Rijeka

A Jewish presence in Rijeka dates from the 15th century with a Jewish community formally established in 1781. On the 27 of September 1779 the Governor by decree permitted the Jews to form their own place of prayer – „kehile” and it was decided to open it temporarily in the private house of family Penso. The family Ventura was against it. Therefore the decision was made to open the synagogue in a specified rented building and not in a private house. Today the Jewish community has over 100 members, most of them are oldergeneration. The aim of the Jewish community is to preserve the history, culture and tradition of Jews in Rijeka and its surroundings whose roots can be traced back over 600 years...
