About Nicosia

Nicosia is the capital and seat of government of the Republic of Cyprus, and as such is the farthest southeast of all EU member states' capitals. It has been continuously inhabited for over 4,500 years and has been the capital of Cyprus since the 10th century. Nicosia has been in continuous habitation since the beginning of the Bronze Age 2500 years BC, when the first inhabitants settled in the fertile plain of Mesaoria. Nicosia has a subtropical-hot semi-arid climate with long, hot and dry summers. Most of the rainfall occurs in winter. Nicosia has several museums, art galleries and places of interest for tourists.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Nicosia

The history of the Jews in Cyprus dates back to the 3rd century BCE, after trade relations had been established between Cyprus and the Land of Israel. Jews have also had links with Cyprus through both the Ottoman empires and the British rule from 1878 until 1948 and the start of the State of Israel. Some 450 Jewish families live in Cyprus today, many of whom are foreign citizens residing in the country for business purposes. Half of them are Israelis, the rest are mostly British or Russians. There is an Israeli Embassy in Nicosia. There is also a Chabad House in Nicosia. Cyprus Greece and Israel have signed a tri-lateral agreement on trade and this is bound to increase tourism and kosher options.
