About Port Louis

Port Louis is the capital city of Mauritius. It is mainly located in the Port Louis District, with a small western part in the Black River District. Port Louis is the country's economic, cultural and political centre, and most populous city. Port Louis was already in use as a harbor in 1638. In 1735, under French government, it became the administrative center of Mauritius and a major reprovisioning halt for French ships during their passage between Asia and Europe, around the Cape of Good Hope. Port Louis features a hot semi-arid climate.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Port Louis

A Jewish community first formed in Port Louis during the second World War when a group of Jewish refugees were deported from the port of Haifa, Israel, to Mauritius where they were interned in a prison Beau Bassin, there were about 1600 passengers on that ship. After the war most made there way to Palestine though 127 passed away in Mauritius and were buried in St. Martins where there is a Jewish graveyard. Today there is a synagogue consecrated by Rabbi Moshe Silberhaft in March 2011 at the Jewish centre. There is a current population of about 100.
