About Kiryat Shmona

Kiryat Shmona is a city located in the North District of Israel on the western slopes of the Hula Valley near the Lebanese border. The city was named after the eight people, including Joseph Trumpeldor, who died in 1910 defending Tel Hai. Today, about one-third of Kiryat Shmona's population of 13,100 are younger than 19, and the majority of its inhabitants are Jews, particularly of Moroccan extraction. The town of Kiryat Shmona was established in May 1949. The town has a cable car link with Manara above in the Naftali mountain range and also is home to an activity center and toboggan run located in the south of the town. In the residential area there is an urban natural space called Park HaZahav. Park HaZahav covers 11 hectares in the middle of the city. It comprises many diverse natural resources.

There is a large Sephardi population in Kiryat Shmona and around 40 synagogues, there are a number of kosher establishments in Kiryat Shmona including 3 popular restaurants, many cafes, shops and a kosher McDonalds. There are many interesting things to do around the city including hiking, kayaking and all-terrain vehicle trips. In the north part of Park HaZahav there is a small mosque made of checkered basalt and chalk stone, a remnant of the Arab village. The mosque now houses a museum of Kiryat Shmona’s history, including a photographic exhibition from the city’s early days and an audiovisual program documenting the city’s development. The old inn near the city center is an ancient building that once served as a castle. The inn is made of chiseled stone adorned with arches and has a small courtyard and a theater in the center. This building is now used as an arts center and hosts various events.
