About Tiberias

Tiberias is an Israeli city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, Lower Galilee. Established in 10 CE, it was named in honour of the emperor Tiberius. Tiberias was founded sometime around 10 CE in Herodian Tetrarchy of Galilee and Peraea by the Roman client king Herod Antipas, son of Herod the Great. Herod Antipas made it the capital of his realm in the Galilee. Tiberias has been severely damaged by earthquakes since antiquity, there have been 16 known earthquakes up to 1943. Tiberias is located between the shore and the slopes of Sea of Galilee, between the elevations of -200 to 200 meters. The summers in Tiberias are very hot with an average maximum temperature of 36C (97F) and average minimum temperature of 11C (70F) in July and August. The winters are mild with temperatures ranging from 18C to 8C (65F and 46F). The city has 30 hotels including luxury hotels alongside bed and breakfasts and youth hostels. Most hotels are located on the beach and offer vacationers a real treat. Expansive lawns, a water park for the whole family, restaurants and bars, and extreme water sports are just a sampling of guest offerings.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Tiberias

Tiberias was venerated in Judaism from the middle of the 1nd century CE and since the 16th century has been considered one of Judaism's Four Holy Cities, along with Jerusalem, Hebron and Safed. It has been known for its hot springs, believed to cure skin and other ailments, for thousands of years. The Jewish oral tradition holds that Tiberias was built on the site of the Israelite and later Jewish village of Rakkat, first mentioned in the Book of Joshua. In the census of 1945 there were 6000 Jews, 4540 Muslims, 760 Christians, 10 others. As of December 2011, 41,700 inhabitants lived in Tiberias. Many important Jewish religious leaders lived in Tiberias. Some of them, and others that did not reside in the city, were traditionally buried there. Among the more famous tombs, which today serve as places of pilgrimage, are the tomb of Rabbi Akiva, the tomb of his wife Rachel, the tomb of Rabbi Meir "Master of the Miracle" and the tomb of the Rambam (Maimonides) . The waterfront has recently been redeveloped and has many cafes, restaurants and hotels.
