About Tel Aviv Yafo

Tel Aviv was founded in 1909 when around 60 people drew lots for plots of land, the city grew. Tel Aviv is located on the Mediterranean coast in central-west Israel. Today it is Israel’s second largest city behind Jerusalem, at 430,000 people. Although the whole area called Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area, also known as Gush Dan has a population of nearly 3.5 million residents. Tel Aviv is a global city with the second largest economy in the Middle East behind Abu Dhabi. Tel Aviv is known as the ‘White City’. It has the greatest amount of buildings built in the ‘International (Bauhaus) Style’, many Architects fled Germany in the 1930s and developed their practices in Tel Aviv. These days Tel Aviv is known as a party city, attracting a large crowd of young people to its streets after dark to its bars and night clubs.

The first Jewish settlement outside of Yafo was started by Yemenite Jews in the 1880’s, it wasn’t until 11 April 1909, that 66 Jewish families gathered on a desolate sand dune to parcel out the land by lottery using seashells, by 1948 the population had grown to 200,000 and the borders were increased to include Jaffa. The City is now called Tel Aviv-Yafo. There are 544 synagogues including the Great Synagogue established in the 1930s. The population is 93% Jewish, 1% Muslim, and 1% Christian. The remaining 5 percent were not classified by religion. Israel Meir Lau is chief rabbi of the city. The city has 3 large museums and many smaller ones, the city also boasts many restaurants including more than 100 sushi restaurants. There are also sports teams in top league football, basketball, and baseball. Tel Aviv is ranked as the greenest city in Israel, it has many green areas and parks. Tel Aviv also has 8.7 miles of beaches.
