About Dusseldorf

Düsseldorf is a city in western Germany known for its fashion industry and art scene. It's divided by the Rhine River, with its Old Town on the east bank and modern commercial areas to the west. In the Old Town, St. Lambertus Church and Castle Tower both date to the 13th century. Streets such as Königsalle and Schadowstraße are lined with boutiques. In the 7th and 8th centuries, the odd farming or fishing settlement could be found at the point where the small river Düssel flows into the Rhine. It was from such settlements that the city of Düsseldorf grew. Düsseldorf experiences moderate winters with little snowfall and mild to warm summers. Düsseldorf has a population of 593,681 within city-limits (31 December 2011). Düsseldorf is well known for its Altbier, a hoppy beer which translates as old [style] beer. One of the biggest cultural events in Düsseldorf is the Karneval (also referred to as the "fifth season") which starts every year on 11 November at 11:11 a.m.
