About Bloemfontein

Bloemfontein Afrikaans and Dutch for "fountain of flowers" or "blooming fountain") is the capital city of the province of Free State of South Africa; and, as the judicial capital of the nation, one of South Africa's three national capitals; the other two capitals are Cape Town, the legislative capital, and Pretoria, the administrative capital. Bloemfontein experiences a semi-arid climate, with hot summer days (Jan: max:32 °C (90 °F) min:19 °C (66 °F); frequent afternoon thunderstorms) and cooler, dry winters, often with frosts (July: max:14 °C (57 °F) min:−3 °C (27 °F)). Being a city that is central to both the Free State province and South Africa, Bloemfontein serves as a geographical wonder for overnight travellers. This has given much scope and attention to the accommodation, restaurant & shopping tourism industries and in the past 20 years the city has seen many tourism inspired businesses spring up.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Bloemfontein

Jewish families played an important pioneering role in the development of Bloemfontein. Isaac Baumann of Hesse-Cassel (1813–1881), one of the first settlers to buy land in the new township in 1848, established the first trading store. While small, Bloemfontein’s Jewish community continues to be active. In 1997, the large Orthodox synagogue was sold and the congregation relocated to the smaller premises of the now defunct Reform congregation. In 2004, the community numbered about 180 Jews.
