Kosher Bed & Breakfast in Portugal

Passado de Pedra is a Bed & Breakfast, situated in Caria, a small village, in Portugal.

The house belonged to the great grandfather of the present owner, nobody is sure about the year of its construction, but above the lintel of the entry in the first floor, is graved the date of 1810.

The architectonic group was formed by one main building with three floors, two as dwelling-house and the ground-floor with two "lojas" for animals. This was typical of the traditional houses in this region. Besides this building, there existed a wine mill and a building where the straw was kept.

The house was rebuilt maintaining its original plan and using, whenever it was possible, the same type of materials (wood and stone), combined with more up to date architectural materials and objects.

Caria is near Belmonte, witch is a historical village, were there is a unique Jewish Community that gathers at Bet Eliahu Synagogue.

Belmonte is a fascinating village. Cut in the granite, it has kept its medieval atmosphere with a 13th century castle and a romanesque-gothic church.

In the 14th century there existed in Belmonte a thriving Jewish community. From their old synagogue remains an inscription dated 1296.

When the Jews were expelled from Spain, in 1492, by the Catholic Kings this community increased in number. However, in 1496, D. Manuel I decreed a forced conversion to Catholicism. The persecution takes place and leads to the emergence of a crypto-Jewish community that survived over the centuries, maintaining their rituals and traditions.

After centuries of existence in secret, it is in the 20th century, in the twenties, that Samuel Schwarz "brings to light" the existence of the community in Belmonte.

When the persecutions from the Inquisition and the processes of the Catholic Counter Reform were finished, it was discovered that in the town of Belmonte many of the Jewish traditions were still alive.

The community of Belmonte is formed by about 200 people and is the last community of original peninsular crypto-Jews, who live as such.

The community of Belmonte has a remote origin, attested since 1297, and survived until today, having a synagogue, a cemetery and a rabbi.

In 1989 the Jewish community of Belmonte was officially recognized, and a new synagogue was inaugurated in 1997.

In Belmonte you can also visit the first Jewish museum, in Portugal, this museum was built to promote the Jewish culture and the history of the Portuguese Jews.

Besides Belmonte, in the region called "Beiras", there are several cities and towns: Penamacor, Fundão, Covilhã, Belmonte, Guarda, Celorico da Beira, Linhares da Beira Gouveia, Trancoso and Pinhel were the Jewish presence can be seen and this lead to the development of "The Ancient Jewries Route".

Being in Caria you can visit some of the main Jewries: in the city of Covilhã at 12 km (get to A23 and then take the exit to Covilhã), in Belmonte at 8 km ( take N18-3 and turn right after the roman bridge to N345) and Guarda at 27 km (get to A23 till the exit nº 35).
