Thessaloniki

The city of Thessaloniki is the capital of the region of Macedonia in northern Greece and is the second largest city in Greece after Athens and serves as the administrative center of the north. Thessaloniki is very different from Athens - modern, cosmopolitan, colorful, and richer. The city is vibrant and full of life, it is a university city. At weekend, the pier in the port in the heart of the city, the compound around it, is filled with thousands of people walking back and forth on the promenade. The emblem of the city is the white tower built in the 15th century and is located near the beach.

A walk through the Old City takes us along thousands of years, from ancient times, from the glorious period of the days of the kingdom of Alexander the Great. The period of Roman rule, the Crusades in the history of Christianity and 500 years of Ottoman rule and onwards until the independence of Greece in 1912. The city is rich in length and breadth with great  examples of ancient architecture such as the Romanesque Peristyle, the Gothic Palace, Renaissance portals and noble houses, the Baroque facades and modern architecture which all blended wonderfully with its rich heritage.
 

Judaism has left its mark on the city throughout 2,000 years of history. The first Jews came to Thessaloniki as early as the first century AD when the Christian apostle Paul visited there. However, the great mass of Jews came in the wake of the expulsion of the Jews of Spain and Portugal.
During the Golden Age of Thessaloniki Jewry, the Jews ran the port a nobody had worked there during Shabbat. . Not for nothing is the city called "Jerusalem of the Balkans". A large part of the Jewish community in Thessaloniki was destroyed in the Holocaust.
