About Sherman Oaks

Sherman Oaks is a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of the city of Los Angeles, California. It has two city parks and a senior center. The neighborhood includes eight public and seven private schools. As of the 2010 census, according to the San Fernando Valley Almanac, Sherman Oaks had a population of 51,677 people. The Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park is in Sherman Oaks. The park has an auditorium, baseball diamonds, indoor & outdoor basketball courts, a children's play area, a 60-person community room, American football field, soccer (football) field, and lighted tennis courts. Located in the same place as the park, the Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Pool is a seasonal outdoor heated swimming pool. Sherman Oaks is 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles and 30 minutes from Venice Beach. The weather in Sherman Oaks produces hot generally dry summers, warm and wet autumns and cool damp winters.

There are thought to be about 150,000 Jews across the whole of the Valley area of which Sherman Oaks is part of. Since the 1970s the Jewish population has changed with a large influx of Iranian Jews. The area doesn’t have a JCC, and hasn’t had one since 2000, but is in the process of building two smaller buildings. There are a small number of religious Jews in Sherman Oaks and there is a Chabad House, there are other mainly Reform synagogues in the area. There are also a few kosher places to eat, plus kosher shops.
