About Portland

Tourists visit Portland's historic Old Port district along Portland Harbor, at the mouth of the Fore River and part of Casco Bay, and the Arts District, which runs along Congress Street in the center of the city. Portland Head Light is located in nearby Cape Elizabeth and marks the entrance to Portland Harbor. The city seal depicts a phoenix rising from ashes, which aligns with the city's motto, Resurgam, Latin for "I will rise again." The motto refers to Portland's recoveries from four devastating fires. The city of Portland, Oregon, was named for Portland, Maine. Portland has a humid continental climate with rather cold, snowy winters, and warm, occasionally almost hot, summers. The monthly daily average temperature ranges from 11.3 °F (−5.4 °C) in January to 69.1 °F (10.6 °C) in July. The Arts District, centered on Congress Street, is home to several museums and art galleries, an arts college and art studios. There are many green parks in and around Portland.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Portland

In 2007 it was estimated that there were 4,300 Jews living in Cumberland and York Counties, Portland is the capital of Cumberland County. There are two synagogues located in Highlands to the west of Portland, one is Orthodox the other is Conservative. There is also a Reform Synagogue to the south of Portland beyond Fore River. In the centre of Portland is the 1911 synagogue, this has recently been restored and now as well as being a place of worship is also a Jewish museum charting the history of Jewish Portland, it is an exhibition space for local Jewish artists, and has a holocaust exhibition of Maine’s Holocaust survivors.
