About Oxford

Oxford is a city in the South East region of England and the county town of Oxfordshire. With a population of 159,994. The city is known worldwide as the home of the University of Oxford, the oldest university in the English-speaking world. Oxford was first settled in Saxon times and was initially known as "Oxenaforda", meaning "Ford of the Oxen". Oxford has a maritime temperate climate precipitation is uniformly distributed throughout the year and is provided mostly by weather systems that arrive from the Atlantic. As well as being a major draw for tourists (9.1 million in 2008, similar in 2009), Oxford city centre has many shops, several theatres and an ice rink. The historic buildings make this location a popular target for film and TV crews.

Oxford has a small but thriving Jewish community similar to that found in any city that has a large University and range of hi-tech industry. Oxford University had a distinctly anti-Jewish attitude up to the 1930's and so there was never a large Jewish community and the synagogue only seated 50. During WWII around 500 Jewish refugees ended up in Oxford also a similar number of Jewish people were evacuated to Oxford but most didn't stay after the war. Today there are about 300 Jewish families in Oxford, the Jewish population increases in term time with Jewish students. There is a small synagogue and a Chabad House in Oxford.
