About Austin

Austin, on the eastern edge of Texas Hill Country, is not only the state capital, but lays claim to being the "live music capital of the world." It’s also a center for film and home to the University of Texas and Formula 1's Circuit of the Americas raceway. Its abundant parks and lakes are popular for hiking, biking, swimming, boating and other outdoor pursuits. As of July 1, 2014, Austin had a population of 911,791. In the 1830s, pioneers began to settle the area in central Austin along the Colorado River. "Keep Austin Weird" has been a local motto for years, featured on bumper stickers and T-shirts. This motto has not only been used in promoting Austin's eccentricity and diversity, but is also meant to bolster support of local independent businesses. Austin has many large museums and art galleries as well as a strong live music tradition. The Austin Parks and Recreation Department received the Excellence in Aquatics award in 1999 and the Gold Medal Awards in 1004 from the National Recreation and Park Association.

The main center of the Jewish community is in Northwest Austin, the Jewish community also lives south of the river in Circle C Ranch, Western Oaks, and Travis Heights, and north in Georgetown, Round Rock and Cedar Park. There are around 13 Jewish congregations with all the main elements of Jewish religious affiliation represented. There are not many kosher establishments in Austin.
