About Moorabbin

Moorabbin is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 15 km south-east of Melbourne's central business district. Its local government area is the City of Kingston. At the 2016 census, Moorabbin had a population of 5,895. The word Moorabbin is believed to have come from the Aboriginal word moorooboon meaning a resting place. The Post Office opened on 1 September 1857 as South Brighton, was renamed Brighton South around 1886 and Moorabbin in 1909. The Moorabbin East Post Office near Chesterville Road opened in 1960.

Moorabbin Hebrew Congregation was established in 1949 as an independent Orthodox synagogue serving the growing needs of local Jews moving to the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The congregation was formally established in 1950 by Rev. H Nossel, a European trained scholar, together with a dedicated group of layleaders. Rabbi Elisha Greenbaum was appointed Chief Minister of the community in April 2000. Together with his wife, Leah, they have been responsible for offering a host of innovative programs and spiritual growth opportunities to the local community.
