About Punta Cana

Punta Cana is a resort town within the Punta Cana-Bávaro-Veron-Macao municipal district, in the municipality of Higüey, in La Altagracia Province, the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic. The area has beaches and balnearios which face both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, and it is a tourist destination. The weather is hot and humid, especially in late summer and autumn when the Northern Tropics receive their most direct sunlight. The weather is fairly consistent all year, with an average temperature of 26 °C.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Punta Cana

The first Jews known to have reached the island of Hispaniola were Spanish. The Dominican Republic was one of the very few countries willing to accept mass Jewish immigration during World War II. At the Évian Conference, it offered to accept up to 100,000 Jewish refugees. It is estimated that 5,000 visas were actually issued, and the vast majority of the recipients did not reach the country because of how hard it was to get out of occupied Europe. In 1943 the number of known Jews in the Dominican Republic peaked at 1000. The oldest Jewish grave is dated to 1826.
