About Launceston

Launceston is a city in the north of Tasmania, Australia at the junction of the North Esk and South Esk rivers where they become the Tamar River (Kanamaluka). Settled by Europeans in March 1806, Launceston is one of Australia's oldest cities and is home to many historic buildings. The first inhabitants of the area of Launceston were largely nomadic Aboriginal Tasmanians believed to have been part of the North Midlands Tribe. Launceston has an oceanic, temperate climate with four distinct seasons. Many of the buildings in the City's central business district (CBD) were constructed in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and Launceston is a major location of Federation style housing.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Launceston

In 1847 it was arranged that all Jews in Hobart and Launceston prisons should have the privilege of attending synagogue and refraining from work on the Sabbath. Pass holders were permitted to be counted in a minyan, but they could not have honors bestowed on them. There are thought to be about 51 Jewish people in Launceston. There is a Chabad house here.
