About Hobart

Hobart is the capital and most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania. With a population of approximately 225,000. Since its foundation as a colonial outpost, the city has expanded from the mouth of Sullivans Cove in a generally north-south direction along both banks of the Derwent River, from 22 km inland from the estuary at Storm Bay to the point where the river reverts to fresh water at Bridgewater. Hobart has a mild temperate oceanic climate. Hobart is an Antarctic gateway city, with geographical proximity to East Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Hobart

With the arrival of Orthodox newcomers from England, and spurred on by the need to distribute charity, the community consecrated its first synagogue in Hobart on July 4, 1845. In March 1864 the Hebrew Proprietary School was permanently incorporated with the synagogue. The first bet din in the city dates from 1911. The synagogue was closed down in 1871, but it was reopened in 1939. Today the congregation is the focus of most Jewish communal activities. The only functioning consecrated Jewish graveyard in Tasmania is a section of Hobart’s inner-suburban Cornelian Bay cemetery. A statistical analysis of the 2011 Australian census estimated that 285 Jews lived in Tasmania.
