Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Midtown

The first Jewish settlement in what became the United States was in Dutch New Amsterdam, which is now known as New York City. Since then, Jews have settled in New York City in large numbers. 23 Jewish people chose New Amsterdam rather than Amsterdam having been liberated by Dutch forces from Brazil. Peter Stuyvesant was not happy with the idea of Jews living in his town and although pressured to keep the 23 made life very difficult for any Jews living there. By the time the British had captured New York, as it became known, 10 years later there was only one Jew left. The Jewish population grew and moved further North in to the regions that are Midtown, UWS and Upper East Side.
