About Algarve

The Algarve is the southernmost region of continental Portugal. The maximum recorded temperatures in the Algarve fluctuate between 25 °C (77 °F) in winter and 48 °C (118 °F) in summer, with the temperature rarely falling below freezing in the winter. About 450,000 permanent inhabitants (90 residents per km2) live in the area, although this figure increases to over a million people at the height of summer, due to an influx of tourists. In the 1960s, the Algarve became a popular destination for tourists, mainly from the United Kingdom.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Algarve

In the 1300s the Algarve had a thriving Jewish community but this was disrupted and destroyed in December 1496 by an edict of Manuel I of Portugal, expelling those who did not convert to Christianity. The return of Jews to Faro, mostly from Gibraltar and Morocco, took place in the early 1830’s. The land for the Cemetery in Faro was purchased in December 1851, however there are graves dating back to 1838. The Faro Jewish Cemetery is now listed in the Cemeteries classification as a Place of Public Interest in the Portuguese's National Register of National Historical Monuments.
