About Mallorca

Mallorca is the largest island in the Balearic Islands, which are part of Spain and located in the Mediterranean. The native language, as on the rest of the Balearic Islands, is Catalan, which is co-official with Spanish. The Phoenicians, a seafaring people from the Levant, arrived around the eighth century BC and established numerous colonies. Since the 1950s, the advent of mass tourism has transformed the island into a destination for foreign visitors and attracted many service workers from mainland Spain. The boom in tourism caused Palma to grow significantly. The climate of Majorca is a Mediterranean climate, with mild and stormy winters and hot, bright, dry summers.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Mallorca

According to the chroniclers, there were Jewish inhabitants in the Balearic Isles as early as the 2nd century. In consequence of the persecutions of the Almohades in Spain (1146), the number of Jews on the islands increased, and in Palma, the capital of Majorca, a large synagogue and two smaller ones were erected. The Jews of Majorca, Minorca, and Ibiza always formed one congregation. There is a small Jewish community in Palma Mallorca.
