About Chattanooga

Chattanooga, a city in south-eastern Tennessee, is set along the Tennessee River in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Its trolley-like Incline Railway scales steep Lookout Mountain before reaching Ruby Falls waterfall and Rock City, featuring sweeping views, sandstone formations and gardens. Point Park, also atop Lookout, marks the site of a Civil War battle now honored at the Battles for Chattanooga Museum. Chattanooga had a population of 167,674 as of the 2010 census. Winter days are usually mild, with some days below freezing, and summers are hot and humid. Chattanooga hosts the well-known Riverbend Festival, an annual nine-day music festival held in June in the downtown area. There are other festivals that happen during the summer months. Chattanooga touts many attractions, with an aquarium and waterfront attractions along the Tennessee River.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Chattanooga

Although there is some record of Jewish settlement in Chattanooga prior to the Civil War, the beginnings of the first Jewish community appeared in Chattanooga in the years following the war. From a peak of 3800 in 1937, the Jewish population of Chattanooga slid over 40% to 1100 by 1948. A 2000 study of the Chattanooga Jewish community estimated the population at around 1400 members, a significant drop from its pre-World War II peak. Despite the diminished numbers, the remaining Jewish Chattanoogans continue to support a broad range of religious and communal functions. There are three synagogues in Chattanooga, one the Mitzpah congregation is downtown on McCallie Avenue, the other two are to the east of the city centre near the airport. There are no kosher restaurants or kosher shops in Chattanooga.
