About Memphis

Memphis, along the Mississippi River in southwest Tennessee, is known for its music and food. Blues, jazz and rock 'n' roll spill out from the clubs along Beale Street, and restaurants dish up barbecue and soul food. Elvis Presley, B.B. King and Johnny Cash recorded albums at the legendary Sun Studio, and Presley’s Graceland mansion is a popular attraction. Memphis had a population of 653,450 in 2013. Memphis is the youngest of Tennessee's major cities, founded in 1819 as a planned city by a group of wealthy Americans including judge John Overton and future president Andrew Jackson. Many museums of interest are located in Memphis. The National Civil Rights Museum, Brooks Museum of Art, and Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art are some of the 11 major museums. Memphis is home to Temple Israel, a Reform synagogue that has approximately 7,000 members, making it one of the largest Reform synagogues in the country. Baron Hirsch Synagogue is the largest Orthodox shul in the United States. Jewish residents were part of the city before the Civil War, but more Jewish immigrants came here from Eastern Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. About 0.9% of the population is Jewish. There are 6 synagogues in Memphis. There is one main kosher restaurant ‘The Holy Cow’, there are several kosher shops and a couple of kosher bakeries in Memphis. Most are to the East of Memphis in Germantown and Cordova.
