About Nashville

Nashville is the capital of the U.S. state of Tennessee and the county seat of Davidson County. Nashville lies on the Cumberland River in the northwestern portion of the Nashville Basin. Nashville's elevation ranges from 385 feet (117 m) above sea level at the Cumberland River to 1,160 feet (350 m) above sea level at its highest point. Nashville has cool to moderately cold winters, and hot, humid summers. Popular destinations include Fort Nashborough and Fort Negley, the former being a reconstruction of the original settlement, the latter being a semi-restored Civil War battle fort; the Tennessee State Museum; and The Parthenon, a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens. Nashville has a vibrant music and entertainment scene spanning a variety of genres. Perhaps the biggest factor in drawing visitors to Nashville is its association with country music. There are around 16 festivals that run between April and November that are of interest to tourists as well.

Although Nashville was founded in 1780, it did not attract a significant Jewish presence until the 1840s. Today, Nashville has emerged as the largest Jewish community in Tennessee, as it has continued to attract Jews from other parts of the country. By 2001, almost 8,000 Jews lived in the Nashville metro area. The community is very highly affiliated, with 83% of Jewish families belonging to a synagogue. There are about 5 synagogues in Nashville all located to the south-west of the city. Mainly in Belle Mead but extending out to Forest Hills. There is a kosher vegetarian café at the University and a dairy kosher café on Bellevue Road in the south-west of Nashville.
