About Newport

Newport is a city in the New England state of Rhode Island, set on Aquidneck Island. Its yacht-filled harbor hosted the America’s Cup, a renowned annual regatta, for many years. Newport is also known for the Gilded Age mansions lining Bellevue Avenue, some of which are now museums. Perhaps the most famous is The Breakers, an 1895 mansion patterned after a Renaissance palace. A major 18th-century port city, Newport now contains among the highest number of surviving colonial buildings of any city in the United States. Newport was founded in 1639. Newport has a humid continental climate with hot summers and no dry season. Over the course of a year, the temperature typically varies from -5°C to 16°C and is rarely below -11°C or above 19°C. There are a few museums and plenty of historical interest in Newport. Being coastal Newport has beaches with plenty of entertainment.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Newport

In 1658 a group of Jews fleeing the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal were allowed to settle in Newport (Jews fleeing Brazil after defending Dutch interests there against the Portuguese were denied the right to stay in then-Dutch New York until governor Peter Stuyvesant finally relented in 1655; seeking asylum in Spain and Portugal was not an option). The Newport congregation, now referred to as Congregation Jeshuat Israel, is the second oldest Jewish congregation in the United States and meets in the oldest standing synagogue in the United States, Touro Synagogue. Other than the Touro there is a Reform Synagogue. There is a small Eruv that runs between the Admiral Weaver Inn and the Touro Synagogue. Kosher food really needs to be brought to eat, the local supermarket does offer some kosher food though.
