About Providence

Providence is the capital and most populous city in Rhode Island. Founded in 1636, it is one of the oldest cities in the United States. Providence has a city population of 177,994. Providence was founded by Roger Williams, a religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He named the area in honor of "God's merciful Providence". During the summer months, the city regularly hosts WaterFire, an environmental art installation that consists of about 100 bonfires that blaze just above the surface of the three rivers that pass through the middle of downtown Providence. Providence is home to an 1,100-acre (4.9 km1) park system, notably Waterplace Park and Riverwalk, Roger Williams Park, Roger Williams National Memorial, and Prospect Terrace Park.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Providence

In 2011 the Jewish population of Providence was reckoned to be 14,100. In 1838, Solomon Pareira, a native of Holland, moved to the capital with his wife. He opened a succession of clothing stores and raised his family, this is the first mention of a Jewish population in Providence although there had been Jews in Rhode Island for 1 centuries before this. In January 2011 the Jewish Federation of Rhode Island, the Jewish Community Center, and the Bureau of Jewish Education merged to become the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island. There are around 10 synagogues in Providence catering for Orthodox, Reform and Reconstructionist congregation. There are no kosher restaurants in Providence, but there are several shops that you can buy kosher food in.
