About Scranton

Scranton is the county seat of Lackawanna County in the state's north-eastern region with a population of 76,089. In 1778, Isaac Tripp, known as the area's first white settler, built his home here; it still stands in North Scranton, formerly known as Providence, and can be visited. Many of Scranton's attractions celebrate its heritage as an industrial center in iron and coal production and its ethnic diversity. There are several museums in Scranton one which celebrates its industrial past is The Steamtown National Historic Site which showcases steam-era railroading. Excursion trains give visitors tours through Scranton and portions of the Pocono Mountains. Summers are humid and very warm, with occasional heat waves, while winters are cold and snowy.

Jews settled in Scranton when the city was still called Harrison or Slocum's Hollow, the present name having been given to the city about 1850. The first Jewish congregation was organized in 1858, and was reconstituted in 1860 under the name "Anshe Ḥesed." In 1866. There are 5 synagogues in Scranton 3 Orthodox, and one each of Conservative and Reform, they are all located on the east side of the city. There is a kosher deli and a kosher store in Scranton.
