About Portland

Portland, Oregon’s largest city, sits on the Columbia and Willamette rivers, in the shadow of snow-capped Mount Hood. It’s known for its parks, bridges and bicycle paths, as well as for its eco-friendliness and its microbreweries and coffeehouses. Iconic Washington Park encompasses sites from the formal Japanese Garden to Oregon Zoo and its railway. The city hosts thriving art, theater and music scenes. Portland had an estimated population of 619,360 in 2014. Named after the city in Maine, Portland was settled in the 1830s near the end of the Oregon Trail. Portland is located 70 miles east of the Pacific Ocean at the northern end of Oregon's most populated region, the Willamette Valley. The climate is characterized by warm, dry summers and cool, rainy winters.

There are around 3,000 self-identifying religious Jews in Portland, the Jewish population is thought to be about 47,500, this is based on a census in 2011 and before that study it was thought the population was only around 15,000. West Oregon is the home to the more established Jewish population, but east Oregon is where the younger, less affluent, and largely unaffiliated Jews live. At present there are 3 synagogues on the east side all dotted about on the west side the synagogues are either in Downtown and Nob Hill close to the centre, or further to the south west in South West and Hillside. There is one café open Sunday to Friday which is based at the JCC and several shops where you can buy kosher food.
