About Akron

Akron is a city in Ohio. It’s home to Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, with a Tudor Revival manor house, a conservatory and landscaped grounds. The Akron Art Museum displays modern pieces, including pop art and photos, in an 1899 building with a dramatic glass and steel addition. To the north, Hale Farm and Village offers a glimpse of life in the 19th century, with 32 restored buildings, plus gardens and farm animals.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Akron

In the mid-1800s, many Jewish families joined the western expansion and emigrated from Germany to Akron, a canal town that also had an inviting countryside. They sought economic security and religious freedom―a new start in a new town. In 1929, the Akron Jewish Center opened and provided a place for all of the diverse Jewish groups in Akron to gather. The dramatic influx of Eastern European Jews increased population figures some forty-fold to estimates ranging from 6,500 to 7,500. The Jewish population of Akron is far fewer these days and also the number of synagogues has reduced.
