About Ithaca

The city of Ithaca is in central New York and is the county seat of Tompkins County, as well as the largest community in the Ithaca-Tompkins County metropolitan area. The city of Ithaca is located on the southern shore of Cayuga Lake, in Central New York. Ithaca was built on flat land at the bottom of Cayuga Lake, but as it expanded the population moved into nearby land on South Hill, West Hill and East Hill, these areas are several hundred feet above Ithaca and the land rises up steeply there are several waterfalls and gorges that can be visited. It is named for the Greek island of Ithaca. Ithaca is home to Cornell University, an Ivy League school of over 10,000 students. In 2010, the city's population was 30,014. Winters are long, cold, and snowy, summers are warm and humid, with usually comfortable temperatures. Ithaca has various museums a theatre and an art gallery Ithaca is noted for its annual community celebration, The Ithaca Festival.

Within Ithaca a broad selection of kosher groceries and a limited selection of kosher meat is available at Wegmans and other local supermarkets. It is thought that the Jewish population of students a Cornell is 3,500 and so the local population is increased during term time. There is also a kosher catering facility within Cornell campus. There is a Chabad house that caters to the local and student community. Other than Chabad there is on other synagogue Temple Beth El which is Conservative. There is also a kosher restaurant on Cornell called 104 West!, and a kosher shop called North Star on the North Campus.
