About Jersey City

Jersey City is the second-most populous city in the U.S. state of New Jersey, after Newark. It is the seat of Hudson County, as well as the county's largest city. As of 2014, Jersey City's Census-estimated population was 161,146. Among the oldest surviving houses in Jersey City are the Newkirk House (1690), the Van Vorst Famhouse (1740), and the Van Wagenen House (1741). The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. Jersey City is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world. A part of the East Coast Greenway, a planned unbroken bike route from Maine to the Florida Keys, will travel through the city. Liberty State Park is home to Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, the Interpretive Center, and Liberty Science Center. From the park, ferries travel to both Ellis Island and the Immigration Museum and Liberty Island, site of the Statue of Liberty.

The first synagogue, Congregation Ephraim, was founded in 1871 in Jersey City, where the first Jewish family arrived in 1858. This city's oldest existing congregations are Temple Beth-El, on York Street, founded in 1864, and B'nai Israel, established in 1881. Jewish life, which in the earlier decades of the last century flourished in Hudson, is seeing an infusion of new blood in the Hoboken and Jersey City area. There are approximately 6,000 Jews in Jersey City. There are perhaps two kosher restaurants in Jersey City.
