About Elizabeth

Elizabeth is both the largest city and the county seat of Union County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a total population of 114,969, retaining its ranking as New Jersey's fourth largest city. In 2008, Elizabeth was named one of "America's 50 Greenest Cities". The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and cold winters. Elizabeth, originally called "Elizabethtown" and part of the Elizabethtown Tract, was founded in 1664 by English settlers. Elizabeth has 46 parks, the City’s most extensive park is Warinanco Park, a county park designed by the noted landscape architect Frederick Olmstead, who also designed New York’s Central Park. New York City is about 30 minutes away via train from the Midtown Elizabeth, New Jersey Transit Train Station. Newark is ten minutes away.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Elizabeth

David Naar , who was active at the state constitutional convention in 1844, became mayor of Elizabeth in 1849. There were five shuls united under the same rabbinate: JEC Elmora, JEC Adath Israel, Adas Yeshurun, Beis Yitzchak Chevrah T’hillim, and the the Elmora Hills Minyan. Although Beis Yitzchak Chevrah T’hilim may not be open now there are definitely 4 orthodox synagogues. There are a couple of kosher restaurants and some kosher shops.
