About Southfield

Southfield is a city in Oakland County of the US state of Michigan. It is a northern suburb of Detroit, as of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 71,739. Southfield was surveyed in 1817 according to the plan by Michigan territorial governor Lewis Cass. The first settlers came from nearby Birmingham and Royal Oak, Michigan, as well as the states of New York and Vermont. The main branch of the River Rouge runs through Southfield. The city is bounded to the south by Eight Mile Road, its western border is Inkster Road, and to the east it is bounded by Greenfield Road. Southfield's northern border does not follow a single road, but lies approximately around Thirteen Mile Road. There are a high percentage of African Americans living in Southfield, they are mostly middle class.

Southfield has a large Orthodox Jewish population there are 8 synagogues in the town which are all quite close to West 10 Mile Road, there are communities of Orthodox, Conservative and Reform in Southfield. Southfield has a growing Orthodox community. There are also quite a few kosher establishments again quite close to where the synagogues are. The Jewish community started moving out of downtown Detroit after WWII and by the 1970s this started to increase dramatically as the Jewish community became more established and educated.
