About Springfield

Springfield is a city in Western New England, and the seat of Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. Springfield sits on the eastern bank of the Connecticut River. As of the 2010 Census, the city's population was 153,060. Springfield was founded in 1636 by English Puritan William Pynchon as "Agawam Plantation" under the administration of the Connecticut Colony. Springfield's summers are very warm and sometimes humid. Spring and fall temperatures are usually pleasant, and winter is usually cold. Within two miles (3 km) of Springfield are New England's largest and most popular amusement park, Six Flags New England, and its largest and most popular fair, The Big E. Springfield has many annual festivals usually between May and September. Springfield is home to five distinct museums at the Quadrangle.
