About Evanston

Evanston is a suburban city in Cook County, Illinois, United States, 11 miles north of downtown Chicago, bordered by Chicago to the south, Skokie to the west, and Wilmette to the north, with a population of 74,486 as of 2010. Prior to the 1830s, the area now occupied by Evanston was mainly uninhabited, consisting largely of wetlands and swampy forest. Evanston's growth occurred largely because of its accessibility from Chicago by rail. The Northwestern founders did not finalize their commitment to siting the university there until they were assured the Chicago & Milwaukee Railway line would run there. Summers are warm to hot and often humid, winters are cold and snowy with few sunny days, and the normal January high is just below freezing. Spring and autumn are mild seasons with low humidity. Evanston has 5 public beaches on Lake Michigan, it is possible to hire kayaks, and sail boats, entry to the beaches is with a daily or seasonal pass.

There are 9 synagogues in Evanston, most located on West Touhy Avenue or North California Avenue in an area north of West Ridge. There are a number of kosher restaurants just to the west of north shore channel on McCormick Boulevard in Skokie, there are a few in Evanston itself as well.
