About Savannah

Savannah, a coastal Georgia city, is separated from South Carolina by the Savannah River. It’s known for its manicured parks, horse-drawn carriages and ornate antebellum architecture. Its cobblestoned historic district is filled with squares and parks like Forsyth Park, shaded by magnolia blossoms and oak trees covered with Spanish moss. The historic district’s architectural landmarks include the Gothic-Revival Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. Each year Savannah attracts millions of visitors to its cobblestone streets, parks, and notable historic buildings. Summers tend to be humid with many thunderstorms. There are only around 14 frost days in the winter. In 2014, Savannah attracted 13.5 million visitors from across the country and around the world. Savannah's downtown area is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Savannah

In 1733, shortly after the colony of Georgia was founded, an epidemic (thought to be Yellow Fever) started killing off the settlers. Because Savannah’s only doctor died early on, a ship carrying Sephardic Jews was allowed entry on the condition that a doctor on-board, Samuel Nunis, would treat the sick. Soon after their arrival, the Jews organized what would later become Congregation Mickve Israel, one of America’s oldest Jewish communities. Temple Mickve Israel is the third oldest synagogue in America. At one point as much as 35 percent of Savannah’s population was Jewish. Today the number is closer to 1.5 percent, about 3,500. Savanah has three very large congregations, Mikve Israel in downtown Savanah and the other two further south near Poplar Place/University Place. There are no kosher restaurants in Savanah, there are shops where you can buy kosher food and there is a local kashrut authority.
