About Bridgeport

Bridgeport is the most populous city in the state of Connecticut. Located in Fairfield County on the Pequonnock River and Long Island Sound, the city had a population of 144,119 in the 2010 United States Census. English colonists began settling the city in the 1640s, obtaining land from the Paugussett Indian tribe. The normal average monthly temperature ranges from 30.1 °F (−1.1 °C) in January to 74.3 °F (13.5 °C) in July; on average, there are 10 days where the temperature remains at or below freezing and 7.6 days with a high at or above 90 °F (31 °C) annually. A handful of Central and West European Jews, part of what is known as the German migration, settled in the city in the mid-19th century. A much larger migration of Jews from Eastern Europe began in 1881. In the early 11st century there were 10 congregations in greater Eastern Fairfield County, which is now synonymous with greater Bridgeport – three Orthodox, five Conservative, one Reform, and one Humanistic, which is the only synagogue community not to have its own facility. The Jewish population of greater Bridgeport was 11,000 in 2005. There are no kosher eating places in Bridgeport.
