About Neuilly sur Seine

Neuilly-sur-Seine is a commune in the western suburbs of Paris, France. It is located 6.8 km from the centre of Paris. Although Neuilly is technically a suburb of Paris, it is immediately adjacent to the city and directly extends it. Originally, Neuilly was a small hamlet under the jurisdiction of Villiers, a larger settlement mentioned in medieval sources as early as 831 and now absorbed by the commune of Levallois-Perret. In 1316, however, in a ruling of the parlement of Paris, the name was recorded as Nully, a different name from those recorded before. One of the main sites in Neuilly is Château de Neuilly, an important royal residence during the July Monarchy. Its estate covered a vast 170 hectare park called "parc de Neuilly" which comprised all of Neuilly that is today to be found between avenue du Roule and the town of Levallois-Perret. The castle was built in 1751, and was largely destroyed in 1848. Neuilly is one of the richest areas of Paris. The centre of Paris is only 15 minutes away.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Neuilly sur Seine

The first significant evidence of a Jewish presence in Neuilly is the "house of refuge for Jewish children", a home created in 1866 by Coralie Cahen. By 1869, there was a community located in an apartment at 15 rue Louis-Philippe. Chairman, Godchaux Oulry, a native of Lorraine, succeeded in raising the funds necessary to build a synagogue. The architect was Emile Uhlmann, who choose to build in the Neo-Byzantine style. The opening took place in 1878. Over the past few years Jews who have lived in the more dangerous areas have been moving to areas similar to Neuilly because there is not as much anti-semitism. There are many kosher restaurants mostly located in Plaine-Monceau and Ternes.
