About Troyes

Troyes is located on the Seine river about 150 km (93 mi) southeast of Paris. This area is known as the Champagne region of Northern France. Many half-timbered houses (mainly of the 16th century) survive in the old town. Troyes has been in existence since the Roman era, as Augustobona Tricassium, which stood at the hub of numerous highways, primarily the Via Agrippa. In medieval times Troyes was an important international trade centre, centring on the Troyes Fair. The name troy weight for gold derives from the standard of measurement evolving here. The winters are cool and the summers are warm to hot with moderate rainfall all year.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Troyes

Evidence of the earliest period of Jewish settlement in Troyes is derived from rabbinic sources. From the first half of the 11th century, an organized Jewish community collected taxes from its members, and Jews owned real estate, more particularly vineyards. Rashi the well known commentator on the Torah and Talmud was born in February 1040 and died here in July 1105 in Troyes for part of his life he moved to Worms in modern day Germany but moved back when he was 25 joining the Beth Din in Troyes. It is likely the Jewish community was only about 100 strong in Rashi's time. The community, which was reconstituted after World War II, numbered 400 in the early 1970s and has since 1966 maintained the Rashi Community Center. The Synagogue is Located in an historic section of town, this synagogue is a replica of one from Rashi’s time. Begun in 1982, it was dedicated in 1987.
