About Colmar

Colmar is situated on the Alsatian Wine Route and considers itself to be the "capital of Alsatian wine" (capitale des vins d'Alsace). The city is renowned for its well-preserved old town, its numerous architectural landmarks, and its museums, among which is the Unterlinden Museum.

Colmar's Synagogue was built in 1843 in a Neoclassic style. At its peak, in 1870, the Jewish community of Alsace numbered 35,000 people. There has been a Jewish population in Alsace at least since 1000 when the Frankish monarchy ruled the area. Today there is a small Jewish community in Colmar.
