About Helsinki

Helsinki, Finland’s southern capital, sits on a peninsula in the Gulf of Finland. The biggest historical museum in Helsinki is the National Museum of Finland, which displays a vast historical collection from prehistoric times to the 21st century. Helsinki has three major theatres, Helsinki is home to two full-size symphony orchestras, the Helsinki Festival is an annual arts and culture festival, which takes place every August. Helsinki has a humid continental climate temperatures in winter are on average in January and February around −5 °C (23 °F). The average maximum temperature from June to August is around 19 to 22 °C (66 to 72 °F).

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Helsinki

Finland is home to approximately 1,500 Jews, who mostly live in Helsinki. Jews came to Finland as traders and merchants from other parts of Europe in the late 18th century and were involved in Finnish life. In WWII Jewish soldiers served in the Finnish military. They fought as an independent force but were involved in the rescue of German troops from the Russians, by the end of the war Finland had signed a pact with the Allies which forced them into war with the German troops who were still in the country. During Israel’s War of Independence 29 Finnish troops fought for Israel. There is one synagogue and a Jewish school, there is also a kosher deli with a restaurant.
