About Auckland

Auckland, based around 1 large harbours, is a major city in the north of New Zealand’s North Island. In central Queen Street, the iconic Sky Tower has views of Viaduct Harbour, which is full of superyachts and lined with bars and cafes. Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park, is based around an extinct volcano and home to the formal Wintergardens. Mission Bay Beach is minutes from Downtown. Auckland has a subtropical climate, with warm, humid summers and mild, damp winters. The average daily maximum temperature is 13.9 °C (75.0 °F) in February and 14.9 °C (58.8 °F) in July. A number of arts events are held in Auckland. Important institutions include the Auckland Art Gallery, Auckland War Memorial Museum, New Zealand Maritime Museum, National Museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy, and the Museum of Transport and Technology.

There is also a small, long-established Jewish community. The Auckland Jewish community has a rich history and tradition, dating back to the earliest days of British sovereignty in 1840. Today there are over 4,000 Jews in Auckland from a wide range of backgrounds; some, many generations Kiwi, some from England and Scotland, others came as refugees from Nazi Europe and more recently, immigrants from the former Soviet Union, South Africa and from Israel. There is a café/restaurant at the Aukland Hebrew Congregation and also a shop which stocks a wide variety of kosher produce there are several kosher caterers in Auckland. There are three synagogues in Auckland two Orthodox and one Progressive.
