About Leicester

Leicester is a city and unitary authority area in the East Midlands of England, and the county town of Leicestershire. The city lies on the River Soar and at the edge of the National Forest. Leicester is one of the oldest cities in England, with a history going back at least two millennia. It is believed that the Romans arrived in the Leicester area around AD 47, during their conquest of southern Britain. Leicester was an important place gaining city status and then then losing it, it was only regained in 1919. The construction of the Grand Union Canal in the 1790s linked Leicester to London and Birmingham. In 1832, the railway arrived in Leicester. Leicester experiences a maritime climate with mild to warm summers and cool winters. There are many interesting things to do in Leicester including The National Space Centre and other museums art gallerys and music venues.

There had been a medieval Jewish community in Leicester. The first resident in modern times that could be identified as a Jew was in 1849. The first organised modern Jewish community dates from about 20 years later. By 1935 the population was about 200 it reached a peak between 1955 and 1965 when the Jewish population reached about 1,100 since then the numbers have been going down, there are a few hundred Jewish people still left in Leicester with three thriving synagogues down from 4. The main synagogue is the Leicester Hebrew Congregation which formed between 1866 and 1874, the building today was built in 1895.
